It was the story that shocked the nation and captured headlines for more than a year. In January 2001, Diane Alexis Whipple bled to death in the hallway of her ritzy Pacific Heights apartment building when she was mauled by two Presa Canarios, a vicious breed of attack dog imported from the Canary Islands. After the lethal attack, animal experts testified that the dogs could not have been stopped, explaining that they had entered a frenzy called the "Red Zone".
Now, New York Times best-selling author Aphrodite Jones shows that the mauling was only one part of a frightening story involving obsession, bestiality, and illegal dog rings. The dogs belonged to Whipple's neighbors, lawyers Marjorie Knoller and Robert Noel, who had been keeping them for a leader of the notorious prison gang the Aryan Brotherhood.
Jones takes us deep into the bizarre world of Paul "Cornfed" Schneider, a Hannibal Lechter-type character who actually owned the dogs, Bane and Hera. She explains how Noel and Knoller, after being warned about these killer dogs, brought them to the heart of San Francisco, leading the dogs eventually to murder an innocent next-door neighbor. Jones also reveals the shocking L.A.-area whereabouts of the offspring of Bane, the dog most directly involved in the mauling.
Jones is a masterful investigator and writer who has interviewed the complete cast of characters - including Robert Noel and Marjorie Knoller during their imprisonment - and can now tell the full story of what happened in that apartment hallway. Red Zone is a riveting pause-resisting account of this news-making story that takes us deep into the relationship between man and animal.
Red Zone The BehindtheScenes Story of the San Francisco Dog Mauling (Audible Audio Edition) Aphrodite Jones Kat Heiser Crime Rant Classics and Notorious USA Books
This book is well written for a book that I would rather see as fiction or a bad nightmare. It was infuriating getting to know the two most evil people living today on the face of this earth. The dedication was a little idealistic as far as talking about responsibility towards the globe; when we have to be responsible for ourselves first our soul our morality. Also the Book of Revelation paragraph was corny and out of context; the only beasts I read about in this book were the two legal liars plus the judge.
Realizing they had no control over or use for a lame dog, they sacrificed Bane by siccing both dogs on Diane thinking that none would be the wiser, Bane would be put to sleep and they would continue their fierce evilness, not answering to anybody. Nobody actually saw the trigger or the moment the dogs went into the Red Zone and nothing Evil 1 said could be taken as remotely truthful. It is my opinion that they(having mocked Diane previously) wanted to scare the bejeezus out of her(and not only her) in any way shape or form. but it's hard to rationalize evil or understand those with their heads up their butts.
Everybody knew that day would come yet were powerless over these evil forces named of Bob and Marj. They should be put down with a new experimentally and gradually lethal drug that requires many injections over the course of months to actually kick in.

Red Zone The BehindtheScenes Story of the San Francisco Dog Mauling (Audible Audio Edition) Aphrodite Jones Kat Heiser Crime Rant Classics and Notorious USA Books Reviews
The book answered alot of questions I had when watching the dog mauling case on TV. It clearly brought my memory back of that horrible occurence. I enjoyed reading about the many things I did not know when it happened. The details in the book were accurate due to the author's painstaking research. The book's details were many and very interesting. In my opinion it was a well written book and I thank the author for this.
Excellent service and merchandise.
couldn't put it down.
I bought this book as a gift for my nephew, I had read it years ago and he likes books about true crime and was pleased to have found it for him so easily.
Excellent book
This book is well written; the details are concise and specific. It tells the story of the horror of a needless death and a dog owner devoid of conscience. If you are squeamish you may not want to read "The Red Zone". I felt I had to read it in honor of Diane Whipple, the lovely, innocent women who was forced to endure and then succumb to Marjorie Knoller's (and her husband's) unbelievable lack of judgment. The dogs they chose to breed and own were bred for one purpose only - ferocity. They had ample warning their dogs were wildly dangerous but they ignored it. In Knoller's case I believe she must be lacking that portion of the brain that allows for human empathy; she seemed to have none. And as for justice - in the end you will be screaming for it but will be left feeling it was lopsided at best. I knew many of the facts of the case before reading this book but reading "The Red Zone" put things in perspective for me.
I wonder what Aphrodite Jones was smoking when she scribbled this mess? Where to begin? Sorry, I'm not inclined to go into much detail - suffice it to say I wasted my time slogging through this one. Jumped around? Ya think? Every other paragraph switched from one topic to another, as the reader is tossed about to the point where he/she doesn't care anymore one whit about any of the characters. This case originally interested me when it was in the news. I wondered how it had turned out in the end, thus the reason I bought this book. Poor Diane Whipple; well, she didn't need a lot of character development - getting mauled by any animal is horrific enough, no matter who is on that end.
But the rest of the players in this drama, from end to end garnered no sympathy or kudoes for their efforts.
I found it impossible to stay tuned in as the narrative jumped, for instance when AJ told the reader how hard it would be to move those monsterous dogs from the farm to the lawyers'... if that's where they were going? For several pages we are told how a livestock trailer would be needed, cages able to withstand tremedous force to contain the beasts, with skilled dog trainers on hand. But so on the day they finally showed up to get the dogs, we are only told about the attitude displayed by Robert Noel and Marjorie Knoller, according to the idiot who originally agreed to house and raise the puppies. No mention whatsoever about the vehicle they brought, there was no dog handlers with them, nothing was said about how the dogs were caged or how they behaved during transport. In fact, this brings me to this curiosity ~ throughout the entire book, we are supposed to imagine these dogs as always vicious, always ready to attack anything alive and moving. But Jones failed on all counts. This is saying something, because I personally detest out of control animals, be it dogs or people riding horses they cannot manage. Reading this account of these dog's behavior, I wasn't at all convinced they were a constant threat to anyone, only badly mismanaged by two thoroughly stupid and clueless caretakers. Noel and Knoller did everything wrong, they were just nasty people. People who make animals into their children, and raise them to be human-like should be enjoined from animal ownership, period. No question, Noel and Knoller were a piece of work, completely without any regard for anyone other than themselves, and it's just sorts like this, from the rest of society, needs protection.
I can't end this without mentioning the account of Whipple's parnter Sharon Smith's souless taking advantage of this tragedy by turning it into a crusade for gay couples to have access to their partner's health information. Correct me if I'm wrong (I'd long lost interest in the whole sorry mess by this point), Sharon wasted no time at all in getting herself a new honey with which to shack up. Some rich stunning beauty of course. It was obvious her only interest in the outcome of the trial was in getting more rights for gays and lesbians. Oh, goody. That isn't Aphrodite Jone's fault, but
it certainly colored the reader's view of the principals in this disaster. I finished this drivel only because I'd run out of other stuff to read, and I wanted to see if the perps got their just desserts. Sorry I did. Don't bother to buy this book, if you're curious about the case, Google it!!
